AUJ: History

History

The Ada User Journal is the result of the merger of two independent publications which were published in Europe from 1980.

The first was the Ada UK News, which started with the Volume 1, Number 1, in March 1980, and of which the Ada User Journal continues the numbering. This newsletter was published by Ada UK, being rebranded as Ada User in 1986, and later Ada User Journal in 1994.

In parallel, the Ada-Europe organization started its own journal, under the name of Ada-Europe News in June 1989.

The year 1998 witnessed the merging of the two journals, under the name of Ada User Journal, which was first jointly published by Ada Language UK and Ada-Europe, and then solely by Ada-Europe from 2002.

Journal Bibliography

Professor Nelson Beebe, at the University of Utah, USA, maintains an almost complete bibliography list of the Ada User Journal and predecessors. It can be found in HTML and BIB formats.

30th Anniversary (2010)

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the journal, Volume 30, Issue 1, published an article, written by John Barnes, with an overview of the history of the Ada User Journal. The article also presents images of some of the covers of the Journal during its different periods, which are exceptionally published in color.

Also in the framework of this celebration, Volume 31, Issue 1 (the official 30th anniversary issue), reprinted selected papers from the Journal’s 30-year history, offering a sample of the papers that may be considered to have had the most impact and relevance at the time of publication. The papers were selected by a small group of former editors and distinguished readers of the Journal. The “Guest Editors of the 30th Anniversary Issue” were Albert Llemosi, Andy Wellings, Dan Simpson, Dirk Craeynest, Ian Pyle, Jean-Pierre Rosen, John Barnes, Juan António de la Puente, Michael González Harbour and Tullio Vardanega.

You can find the complete contents of these two issues in the Online Archive of the Journal.
